The writing of science fiction short stories has certainly seen an unprecedented and rapid growth in various Indian languages, even though they may not have become as popular as expected among the masses yet. However, the appearances of science fiction novels are still few and far between. Novel writing is a challenging enterprise that demands complete dedication and time. Science fiction novel writing is even more challenging. Fulfilling this challenge, Archana Mirajkar has given readers a rare gift in the publication of her SF novel All the Way Home.

All the Way Home focuses on human existence, its social set-up and family life in the far future. Due to constant warfare, human civilization was destroyed on Earth. The only consolation is that with the help of some astute scientists, humans were saved from extinction by going to the Moon, Mars and Europa.

After this exodus, it took a further four to five thousand years to develop the capability for interstellar travel after which humans were able to populate other solar systems.  Planet "Svarga" is the Earth-like counterpart of one of these star systems and human civilization is the most advanced here.

The name of the sun powering this planet is Ravi. This Earth-like civilization is unique in that the human weaknesses of ill-feelings, envy, hatred along with all pessimism have been eradicated. "Ramrajya" has been established in its ideal state here. People live a life of freedom. No negative feelings, no unpleasantness.

Moreover, advanced genetic engineering has allowed people to grow wings and the human body is capable of photosynthesis. This means that people no longer need to procure food. Energy drink in the form of fruit juice is the norm much like the addiction to the tablet "soma" in The Brave New World. People have this energy drink in the evening while flying around using their wings like we drink tea. Freed from the need of eating, this society is understandably quite advanced in both technological progress as well as in contemplation and meditation.

The author has skillfully and beautifully portrayed the life of the "Svargvasis" or the people of planet Svarg. It offers an alternative to our contemporary life on Earth stemming from a human desire to be free from its disparities, contradictions and bindings. The people of Svarg are untouched by any kind of negativity and always free from any pressures or restrictions in human relationships. Even in sexual relations, there are no strictures.
Only for discharging of child rearing duties do a man and woman get tied in a "parental pact" till the child is 15 years of age. They return to an independent existence after the pact is over. People can choose partners according to their liking and form relationships without any restrictions. They can also choose to die whenever they want.

People voluntarily choose death after achieving their life goals because on Svarga there is neither ageing nor natural death. There is simply the provision of "final rest" i.e., self-willed death.

The story revolves around the protagonist of the novel, Aarushi. On Svarga, couples can have children in 2 ways under the "parental pact," the first is test tube babies who are more popular or else biological offspring who are the exceptions. Protagonist Aarushi is a biological child. She is a member of the space travel team envisaged and designed by the reputed scientist named Sherleck. This space mission is proceeding towards solving the eternal mystery of the origin of life at the birthplace of humans, the native planet Earth. The Earth where there's no life remaining now but there could be some clues regarding the origins of life. Aarushi is absolutely stunned to see a picture resembling herself with her mother in a time capsule found in one of the many excavations being conducted at different spots on wrecked Earth.

And it is here that she is confronted with the philosophical and spiritual aspects of reincarnation, the continuum of life and the invincibility and immortality of the soul.

Having died at a young age on Earth in one of her previous births, she is now able to witness the real life unfolding of her mother's wish that their relationship be preserved in future births too. Here the novel enters into metaphysical realms incorporating  the concept of reincarnation and ends at the point where the reader has been shaken to the core and is left with an avalanche of ideas to reflect upon.

The novel brings to light the different emotional facets of the soul-deep relationship between the mother and daughter, which will greatly move the reader. In flashback, there is a discussion of the horrors of war along with melting polar caps and drying shrinking glaciers. Finally, it is terrible warfare that becomes the cause for the extinction of the human species on Earth. Afflicted with human trafficking and organ trade as well as various forms of terryfying exploitation, perhaps humanity deserved this kind of an end.

This novel by Archana Mirajkar must be welcomed whole heartedly.
